MILWAUKEE, WIS. (January 23, 2018) – The Bryant & Stratton College women's basketball program reached a special milestone on Saturday (1/20) as sophomore guard and returning Second Team All-American, Kiara Donaldson, scored her 1,000th career point.
Donaldson (Milwaukee, WI) went into the game with 975 career total points which forced her to drop 25 points in 35 minutes of play.
With two minutes remaining in the contest, Donaldson was just seven points shy of reaching the 1,000 mark and the Lady Bobcats head coach Jeff Lorenz called a timeout to make sure she was aware.
"We had a significant lead at that point and I really wanted Kiara to be able to reach her 1,000th point at home," Lorenz said. "Our next five games are on the road and I knew her earning this at home would be more special than on the road."
With just seconds remaining in the game, Donaldson sunk two free-throws which put her exactly at the 1,000-point mark. Once she reached 1,000, Coach Lorenz called time-out with 14 seconds remaining and Donaldson was given a standing ovation by the crowd and her teammates.
"I was aware that I was just two points away from 1,000 when I stepped up to the free-throw line," Donaldson said. "But I was five for five from the line before taking those free throws so I was feeling good about making them."
Although Donaldson had the 1,000 points on her mind before the game, she was more determined just for her and her teammates to get a win.
"Before the game it was a combination of me thinking about the 1,000 points and getting the win," Donaldson said. "But I knew that if I did not get it this game than I had seven more games to get it done so getting the win was most important."
The Lady Bobcats were able to celebrate both as they defeated Waubonsee Community College 81-52.
"It felt good after I hit the second free throw and then coach calling timeout because I saw joy in all my teammates faces as they all ran to me to celebrate," Donaldson said.
Now that Donaldson has achieved the 1,000-point mark the team can focus on the remaining seven regular season games and prepare for the regional tournament.
Up next for the Lady Bobcats is a match-up at Loras College on Saturday January 27. The Lady Bobcats defeated Loras 86-68 last season and will hope for a similar result again this time around.
