WAUWATOSA, WI (November 7, 2018) - After an unexpected loss at home vs Rock Valley this past Saturday, the Bryant & Stratton College women's basketball team got back on track Wednesday evening where they earned a 73-58 win over the Marian University Sabres (NCAA DIII) to improve themselves to a 1-1 overall record.
Getting off to a quick start, the Bobcats took an early double-digit lead to end the first quarter 20-10.
"I thought our energy was great right from the jump tonight," Bobcats head coach Jeff Lorenz said. "After the opening game of the season, I think our nerves settled and we were ready to go."
Despite a strong first quarter from the Bobcats, it was the Sabres who gained control of the second quarter as they tied the game up at 27-27 with just over two minutes remaining in the half.
Responding to the Sabre's run, freshman guard, Taynique Hawthorne, put the Bobcats back up by two after an assist from freshman, Ashley Moses, in transition.
A back and forth battle the remaining minutes of the half, the Bobcats led 36-33 at the break while shooting just 28% from the field.
"We struggled putting the ball in the basket," Lorenz said. "The girls didn't get discouraged despite the poor shooting which is why we remained ahead at half."
To start the second half, the Sabre's struck first as they went on a 4-0 run to take an early 37-36 lead.
After a series of trading baskets, Bobcats sophomore, Valerie Nzeakor, showed her experience as she knocked down back-to-back jumpers to keep the game close and close out the third.
Leading by five to start the fourth, the Bobcats didn't let off the gas as they stretched their lead to 11 with just over three minutes remaining to earn their first victory of the 2018-19 season.
Nzeakor led the way for the Bobcats dropping 16 points and 11 rebounds followed by sophomore, Brandilyn Robertson, with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Freshman, Kiyanna Rodgers, produced 10 points and five assists.
The Bobcats had four players scoring double-digit points and two starters earning double-doubles.
