WAUWATOSA, WI (January 7, 2019) - After suffering three straight losses, the Bryant & Stratton College women's basketball team went on the road to Waubonsee Community College where they captured an 84-61 victory improving them to 11-8 overall and 6-5 in region play.
Getting off to a slow start, the Bobcats trailed 8-2 in the first four minutes of action before head coach, Jeff Lorenz, called a timeout to stop the bleeding.
"I just didn't like how the game started," Lorenz said, "We were careless with the ball offensively and our energy wasn't high on the defensive end."
Responding to the Chiefs stellar play, Bryant & Stratton surged out to a 21-12 lead at the end of the first quarter after sophomore forward, Maddy McCoy, knocked down two of two from the line with seconds remaining.
"We started playing our brand of basketball," Lorenz said.
At the break, the Bobcats led by 19 (43-24).
To start the second half, the Chiefs came out agressively as they went on a 16-9 run cutting the deficit down to 12 (52-40) with three minutes left in the third quarter.
Staying composed, Bryant & Stratton held their own through the final few minutes of the third as they remained ahead by double digits (62-44) going into the fourth quarter.
"Runs always happen in the game of basketball," Lorenz said. "It is our job to stay composed defensively in order to eliminate the run."
Three minutes into the final quarter of play, the Chiefs broke out on a 4-0 run before Bobcats freshman guard, Taynique Hawthorne, got things rolling as she converted a tough layup to extend the lead back to 14 (64-48) with seven minutes remaining.
Gaining momentum, freshman guard, Serinity Jackson, sealed the deal on the game as she knocked down a jumper in the lane with just over two minutes remaining giving the Bobcats a 73-50 advantage.
"I thought it was an all-around team win today," Lorenz said. "I think everyone feels like they played a role in this win."
Freshman guard, Kiyanna Rodgers, led the way dropping a team-high 17 points on 60% shooting followed by sophomore forward, Brandilyn Robertson, producing a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds off of the bench.
Hawthorne cotributed 11 points off of the bench Ashley Moses finished with 10 points.
The Bobcats shot just 37.8% from the field but managed to knock down 41.2% of their shots from long distance.
