WAUWATOSA, WI (January 26, 2019) - After a three-game home stand, the Bryant & Stratton College women's basketball team came up short on Saturday against the Carl Sandburg College Chargers 59-57 in the final moments of the game.
Prior to the loss, the Bobcats had won four straight including three at home. The loss put the Bobcats at 14-9 overall and 7-6 in region competition.
Trailing 59-57 with 30 seconds remaining in the game, Bryant & Stratton was in need of a defensive stop and a basket.
With the shot clock winding down, the Chargers were forced into a turnover after Bobcats freshman guard Taynique Hawthorne came up with a steal and passed the ball in transition to sophomore Brandilyn Robertson who proceeded to draw a foul with 13 seconds left and a chance tie the game with two free throws.
Failing to convert at the line, the Chargers snatched the rebound and the Bobcats were forced to foul as they still trailed 59-57.
"It was a battle all game," Bobcats head coach Jeff Lorenz said.
Having multiple fouls to give before the Chargers would be sent to the line, the clock eventually expired as enough time expired to avoid going to the charity stripe.
"Both teams wanted to win the game so bad but unfortunately they made more plays down the stretch," Lorenz said.
Sophmore forward Maddy McCoy led the way for the Bobcats with 14 points and eight rebounds followed by Robertson with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Bobcats shot just under 40% from the field and 21.4% from beyond the arc.
Bryant & Stratton went to the line just 11 times which is a season low and converted six of those 11 free throws.
"We were right there with them but we definitely need to improve in certain areas moving forward," Lorenz said. "I am proud of how we battled but we have a lot of room for improvement on both sides of the ball."
The Bobcats and Chargers squared off earlier this season at the Illinois Central Holiday Tournament where Bryant & Stratton suffered a thrilling 105-100 triple overtime loss.
