Derrick Harper-Stewart Commits to the Bobcats!
The Bryant & Stratton Men's Track & Field team is excited to announce the recent commitment of Derrick Harper-Stewart (Richton Park, IL). Harper-Stewart joins the Bobcats after three successful years as a dual-sport athlete at Southland College Prep High School. Competing at the in both Cross Country and Track & Field, Harper-Stewart brings a range of speed and talent to the Bobcats team. He will primarily work within the long-sprints and mid-distance events while at Bryant & Stratton, training with Coach Brian Lief for the 400m and 800m races.
Said Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Casey Green, "We're very much looking forward to adding Derrick to our team roster. Not only is he a great young man and teammate with a lot of race experience, but we also see him as having true breakout potential. With a bit of time, patience, and training I see Derrick as someone that could be a Regionally and Nationally competitive mid-distance runner for us over the next few years!"
Harper-Stewart has displayed great range in events during his high school career. Competing in cross country 3 mile races, paired with competitions at 400m, 800m, 1600m, and 3200m on the track. As an IHSA Sectional competitor he also has race experience in more competitive and higher stakes meets.
Commenting on his commitment, Harper-Stewart said, "I chose BSC was because it was one of the first schools to reach out to me. The made me a valid offer in comparison with the cost of the school. Also, the school isn't too far allowing me to still be close to family if I needed to go back for any reason. The athletic team sounded like it would be a real family and we would really bond with each other. I'm excited to be training with people from different regions and people who take track seriously."
Derrick Harper-Stewart and the Bryant & Stratton Bobcats Track & Field team will begin activity in October 2020 with a full slate of competitions to kick off in January 2021.
