MILWAUKEE, WI (February 28, 2018) – The Bryant & Stratton College women's basketball team defeated Oakton Community College 97-39 in the opening round of the Region IV tournament last night. The Lady Bobcats (#1 seed) defeated Oakton (#8 seed) earlier in the season 86-47 in mid-December.
This marked as the first playoff win for all sports in Bryant & Stratton College-Wisconsin history as the program is only in its second year and was prohibited from playoff participation last season due to the NJCAA bylaws.
The Lady Bobcats opened up hot with an offensive rebound and a put back layup converted by the second year guard, Ashley Quezaire.
Getting out in transition, the Lady Bobcats opened up a 28-6 lead after Region IV District L Player of the Year, Kiara Donaldson, drilled a three point shot with just seconds remaining in the quarter.
"The game plan was to come out and push the ball in transition," Bobcats head coach Jeff Lorenz said. "We crashed the boards offensively and defensively which was what we needed to do in order to get out to an early lead."
Crashing the boards is exactly what the Lady Bobcats did as they outrebounded the Owls 53-38.
Throughout the second quarter, the Lady Bobcats continued to pile on the points as they led 62-17 at the break.
The second half began with a steal by the combo guard, Jazlyn Drake, proceeding to find Donaldson for a transition bucket.
"It is always important to not get complacent when you have a big lead to start the second half," Lorenz said. "I thought the girls did a great job continuing to play hard on both sides of the floor."
To start the fourth, the Lady Bobcats held an 82-30 lead and were well on their way in capturing the first playoff win in school history.
A quarter-finals victory marks as a very special game for the program but is only a small part of what the team is looking to accomplish.
"This feels great but now it's time to get back to work and focus on the next opponent," Lorenz said.
Moving on to the Region IV Semi-Finals, the Bobcats will square off against Moraine Valley Community College on Saturday at Waubonsee Community College located in Sugar Grove, IL.
Tip-off will take place at 12:00pm and the game can be viewed live on the official Bobcats YouTube Channel.
