WAUWATOSA, WI (July 11, 2019) - Bryant & Stratton College-Wisconsin has hired Quan Nguyen as its Director of eSports. Ngyuen will be responsible for launching the program, recruiting student athletes as well as scheduling and coaching matches and tournaments. Bryant & Stratton will offer scholarships to students starting in fall 2019.
"I am thrilled to see that esports can provide an opportunity for more students obtain degrees in higher education," Ngyuen said. "As an experienced gamer myself, I cannot wait to get help build a program at BSC that will provide prospective student gamers a new route to post-graduate education."
Esports will mark as Bryant & Stratton's 15th varsity sport. The Bobcats have joined the National Association of Collegiate Esports governing body, the country's leader to competitive collegiate video gaming. NACE member college's support more than 1,500 student athletes and offer more than $9 million in esports scholarship and aid.
"Our initial focus will be to spread the word about this unique opportunity to our own and surrounding communities," Ngyuen said. "I expect that Bryant & Stratton will be able to enter the esports scene strong and set the bar high."
Bryant & Stratton will initially compete in Overwatch and explore other games such as League of Legends and CS:GO. Esports will be part of the Bobcats athletics department.
A 500-square foot esports lab is under construction for an August opening at the college's Wauwatosa campus where the program will practice and compete. The lab will be equipped with seven high-end gaming computers, gaming bays as well as a lounge area featuring a 70" monitor for spectators.
The college offers a co-ed team that will hold a full-size roster with the potential of adding more rosters in the future.
"Quan's has a deep knowledge and passion for competitive gaming," Associate Athletic Director Ryan Ratajewski said. "We believe esports has the potential to explode at Bryant & Stratton College the next few years under Quan's leadership."
From 2017-19, Nguyen was an integral part in assisting in coaching student eSports organizations at DePaul University where he helped direct multiple teams.
As a gamer, Nguyen began competing individually from 2001-05 in local HALO 2 tournaments which eventually progressed to Tekken, Counter Strike and Call of Duty tournaments.
Before obtaining his masters degree, Nguyen earned his bachelors degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison.
He currently serves as a professor in the Medical Assisting program at Bryant & Stratton.
