Emmanuel Asabere qualifies for NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship
RIPON, Wis. — Emmanuel Asabere is in his final season with the Bobcats and making the most of it.
Asabere qualified for the NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship after recording a 7.17m jump at the Red Hawk Invite.
Thanks to coach Shaunku Mays and new assistant coach Tavian Stewart, Asabere’s jump was a PR. With great mentorship, Asabere also approaches competitions with a positive mindset.
“I listen to all types of music and just have fun. I go to a meet, and I’m me,” Asabere said. “At meets, you don’t have to be serious all the time … and I always make sure to pray before I compete.”
Not only does this mindset help Asabere find success, but he also uses it to encourage his teammates.
“I always tell my teammates, especially when an event doesn’t go well, ‘Don’t hold it against yourself,’ because you’re not always going to have a good day,” Asabere said. “Don’t let it impact you negatively, and use it to bounce back.”
Asabere has proven to have a solid work ethic and mindset. In his final season with the Bobcats, he will have additional chances to set more personal records and turn heads before heading to Gainesville, Florida.
“I’m going to be an All-American. That’s the goal,” Asabere said. “A year ago, I wasn’t where I am today. I went to nationals and got injured. I’m going to nationals this year with a chip on my shoulder.”
